Coney Island, Brooklyn's seaside resort, has been an inviting seasonal destination for many urban families since the 1830s, and Murray Tinkelman’s drawings capture the cacophony and memories of the crowded boardwalk, concessions, classic Nathan’s outpost, and legendary amusement parks, once home of the Cyclone, Wonder Wheel, and Parachute Jump. “My grandmother had an apartment in Brighton Beach,” the artist said. “I would sleep over on weekends and walk over from Third Street to the beach, barefoot and unescorted at about ten years old—and I loved it.” In his teens, Tinkelman took the train and trolley to Coney Island with friends, and it remained a favorite destination.
