The 76th Academy Awards ceremony was broadcast live on February 29, 2004, but was aired with a five second tape delay― possibly because of Janet Jackson’s recent “wardrobe malfunction,” which occurred during a half-time performance at Super Bowl XXXVII. Banyai references this event in his New Yorker cover, which features the Oscar statuette as a convenient cover up. The magazine’s art director, Francoise Mouly, had several discussions with the artist about just how much skin to reveal in the finished piece.
