In comparison to his cartoons that were seen by a wider audience, A. B. Frost is lesser known for his sport scenes. But they nonetheless offer the opportunity to exhibit his mastery of composition and detail. This specific work represents a corpus of works by the artist, who much enjoyed painting scenes of hunting and fishing. This image and ones like it were sold by subscription in a portfolio of a few works that were distributed by Scribner & Sons in a limited number. Each image in the portfolio would have been related to the others thematically.
