This cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post depicts a neighborhood picnic set in front of a grand Victorian-style home, with a large yard and an accompanying lawn replete with cows. The busy but orderly composition is made up of many different interactions that lead the viewer’s eyes through the picture. Children run about and dogs lounge as a group of neighbors set up tables in the shade for the feast, while onlookers of all ages chat, and men who are still wearing their Sunday Best, smoke and enjoy a round of horseshoe. This idyllic scene is exactly what The Post and the American audience appreciated about John Falter’s work.
