“The Coming of Winter” is drawn by Mary Hallock Foote and engraved by J.H.E. Whitney. The artist’s illustrations were printed through the engraving process by skilled engravers who were employed by publishers to translate artists’ drawings for the presses. The 1890s would see advances in the photomechanical process, opening up a new era in visual representation that allowed the artist's hand and the photographer's vision to be experienced first hand and without intervention.
